Blazing Trails with Heriot: An Interview with Debbie Gough

We recently caught up with Debbie Gough, guitarist and vocalist for the heavy-hitting band Heriot, to talk about their brand-new record Devoured by the Mouth of Hell, their upcoming tour, and some of her personal musical inspirations.

New Record & Touring Plans

Debbie shared how proud she is of their latest album, describing it as a full body of work that really showcases the band’s growth. Unlike their previous EP, this album allowed them to show the world that they have much more to offer. They’re gearing up for their longest tour yet, supporting the band Autopsy this November and December, and the excitement is palpable.

On the creative side, some songs didn’t make the final cut — a new experience for the band — but Debbie believes that letting go of those tracks resulted in a stronger album overall. Unfortunately, no bonus tracks or covers are planned for the Japanese release this time, but they’re open to it in the future.

Musical Influences and Favorite Releases

When asked about favorite albums from this year, Debbie’s top pick was Every Bridge Burning by Nails, a band she’s been a huge fan of and thrilled to see return from hiatus. She also mentioned enjoying Lola Young’s This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway, noting the singer-songwriter’s unique blend of influences with a hint of Amy Winehouse’s vibe.

For albums she returns to time and again, Debbie highlighted Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God — her all-time favorite — alongside Flying Gollum by Wand, perfect for long drives.

Writing and Recording Process

The band took a slower, more focused approach to writing the new record, working in multiple sessions interspersed with touring. They collaborated with producer Josh Middleton (from Syosis and ex-Architects), recording in his home studio, which was a new and rewarding experience for them. The involvement of an outside producer brought a fresh perspective, especially on vocals and solos, elevating the final product.

Guitar Gear and Influences

Debbie primarily plays Strat-style guitars, with a brief history of owning a Les Paul-style Jackson Monik and a Dean Explorer ZX in her younger days. She admits she’s always been more drawn to shreddy guitarists than specifically Strat players, though she appreciates the instrument a lot.

A Bit More Personal

Starting guitar seriously at age 14 after discovering metal, Debbie has also dabbled in piano, drums (just a little), violin lessons as a child, and even the recorder — a classic beginner’s instrument. During lockdown, she spent time learning songs from bands like Converge, Venom Prison, and Every Time I Die, which kept her inspired and busy.

Thoughts on Metal Feuds

When it comes to public feuds in the metal scene, Debbie prefers to stay above the drama. She finds such disputes sad and distracting from what really matters — the music itself.

Final Words

Debbie closed by thanking fans for their support and expressing excitement for people to hear Devoured by the Mouth of Hell. She encourages listeners to check out Heriot’s music and share their thoughts.

If you’re a fan of powerful metal with thoughtful songwriting, Heriot’s latest album is definitely worth your attention. Stay tuned for their upcoming tour dates!
