Finding Meaning in the Mayhem: A Conversation with Corey Glover of Disciples of Verity

Amid global unrest, quarantine life, and a renewed social awakening, Disciples of Verity frontman Corey Glover has found clarity—not just as an artist, but as a father, a Black man in America, and a truth-teller through music.

I recently had the privilege of speaking with Corey about everything from life in lockdown to the emotional weight of racial injustice, and of course, his powerful new metal album. Our conversation was raw, real, and deeply human.

Life in Lockdown: Finding Joy in Stillness

When the world shut down, Corey didn’t just hit pause—he recalibrated.

“I was on the road when the lockdown hit,” he recalled. “The first thing I did was hop on a plane, take a cab, pick up my sons from my ex-wife, and bring them home. We’ve been sheltering in place ever since.”

Like many of us, Corey and his family learned to find joy in simple routines—bike rides through the park, occasional grocery runs, and time to simply be together. Living just outside New York City, he's grateful for the relative calm of his neighborhood.

Even isolation came with silver linings: “We’ve been practicing self-care, learning new things. My sons and I started taking guitar lessons. I needed to finally learn more than just three chords,” he laughed.

A Reckoning at Home and in the World

But not all conversations during quarantine were light. The deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor deeply impacted his household.

“It hit really hard. Being Black in America became a major conversation in our home,” Corey shared. “My sons already had ‘the talk’—how to deal with the police, how they're perceived. But this brought everything into sharp focus.”

When asked about the Black Lives Matter movement and perspectives like that of conservative commentator Candace Owens, Corey didn’t hold back.

“I don’t think there’s anyone I agree with less. I don’t believe what she says is based in lived experience,” he said. “Black lives do matter—and the fact that they haven’t, historically, is the problem. They matter to me, my family, and should matter to everyone.”

The Power of Metal: A Voice for the Voiceless

Shifting gears, we dove into his new project, Disciples of Verity—a record he describes as the metal album he’s always wanted to make.

“This was my opportunity to make a real metal record—hard as nails,” he said, pride in his voice. “Not that I haven’t done heavy stuff before, but this is all-in.”

One standout track, “Remember Living,” features Tara McLeod from the band Kittie. Despite not having a history with the group, Corey said the collaboration made perfect sense.

“Every song on this record is deeply personal. What I know about Kittie is that their music is also very internal and emotionally honest. That’s what connected us.”

Guest appearances on the album weren’t just about star power—they were about need. “If a song called for a specific guitar tone or drum style, we found the right person,” he said. “Morgan Rose, Jeff Loomis—they brought exactly what each track demanded.”

Quarantine Creativity & DIY Recording

The pandemic also changed Corey’s creative workflow. With studios closed, he had to become more self-sufficient.

“I had to build a home setup—mics, recorders, the works,” he explained. “It pushed me to be ready to record at home. That was a big shift.”

Real Talk, Not Just Online Talk

When it comes to social media, Corey admits he’s more of a lurker than an active poster.

“I prefer the real world. I watch, I observe—but I don’t live online. It's not where real change happens.”

As for the uncertain future of live shows, he remains cautious.

“We’ve got a date in Tennessee, but with COVID hotspots flaring up, nothing's guaranteed. I'd rather be safe than sorry,” he said. Even the idea of performing at a drive-in theater isn’t off the table. “Why not? I’d do that. It’s different—but I don’t mind that.”

Daily Rituals & Staying Grounded

Asked about offbeat daily routines, Corey chuckled. “I’ve got a few. Kombucha, apple cider vinegar, burning sage and Palo Santo. I even use dragon’s blood incense. It helps keep my mind right.”

Despite his energetic nature—"ADHD or HDAD, whatever they call it”—he stays grounded, steering clear of caffeine unless absolutely necessary. “Coffee just sends me off on wild tangents.”

Final Thoughts: Listen With an Open Mind

As our conversation wound down, Corey had one last message:

“I hope people listen to our music with an open mind—and get something from it. That’s all I can really ask for.”

In a world full of noise, Corey Glover is focused on what matters: truth, family, expression, and healing. And through Disciples of Verity, he’s proving that metal is more than just sound—it’s a vehicle for survival and soul.
