In a recent conversation with MetalgodZradiO, Logan Mader—guitarist, producer, and founding member of Once Human—opened up about his journey from early days in Machine Head to his latest work in the studio and the cannabis industry. Chatting from an airport on his way back home to Las Vegas, Mader reflected on his roots, his evolving creative roles, and what’s next for one of modern metal’s most quietly influential figures.
From Montreal to Metal: Dual Roots, Dual Passports
Though Logan was born in Montreal, his American roots run deep.
“My parents were living in Canada briefly when I was born,” he explained. “We moved back to Northern California when I was just nine months old. I don’t have any memories of Canada, but I do have dual citizenship.”
That dual citizenship, it turns out, has been a helpful asset during tours—especially when crossing the often-notorious U.S.-Canada border with a tour bus full of metal musicians.
“When they see ‘Canada’ as my birthplace on a U.S. passport, they say, ‘Welcome home.’ Meanwhile, the rest of the band might be getting their bags torn apart or questioned for hours.”
Once Human and the Evolution of a Sound
Once Human’s new album, Scar Weaver, marks a creative high point for the band. After a long release build-up—including five singles and accompanying music videos—Mader is proud of what they’ve accomplished.
“It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been pushing singles since July, and the response has been great,” he shared. “Musically, it’s heavier and more dynamic. We let some riffs get real ugly—in a good way—but also expanded our melodic range.”
Vocalist Lauren Hart’s growth is a highlight of Scar Weaver.
“Her clean singing has come a long way, and she developed this half-clean, half-dirty style that’s really powerful. And her growls are just as brutal as ever.”
More Than Just a Guitarist
Mader isn’t just playing guitar—he’s producing, mixing, tour managing, and working full-time in cannabis.
“I wear a lot of hats in Once Human. I also work with Shavo Odadjian from System of a Down on his cannabis brand, 22 Red. I love the space—it’s super creative and overlaps a lot with music.”
The synergy between the two industries is undeniable.
“Most of my cannabis connections came from the music world. It’s all one creative community.”
Machine Head: Reuniting for Burn My Eyes
When asked about his time in Machine Head, Mader reflected on the band’s legacy and his role in the 25th anniversary tour for Burn My Eyes.
“I actually texted Robb [Flynn] in 2018 and suggested the reunion. At first, he didn’t think it was realistic, but when Phil and Dave left the band later that year, the timing worked out. It was an amazing experience to relive those songs.”
Mader also confirmed that Robb contributed guest vocals to the Once Human track Deadlock.
“He really got involved—rearranged parts and everything. It turned out great.”
The Mahaak Project
While rumors suggested Mader joined the band Mahaak, he clarified his role.
“I’m producing and mixing their album, co-writing, and playing some guitar on it, but I haven’t officially joined the band. That said, I’m excited to work with them. John Dette is playing drums, and their vocalist is relocating from Australia. We’re starting production this summer.”
Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation
As the conversation wrapped up, Mader offered a bit of philosophy for up-and-coming musicians—or anyone chasing their passion:
“Don’t try—just do. Focus on the process, not the end goal. Do everything you can today. That’s what I’ve learned.”
He also left a heartfelt message to fans:
“Thank you to all the Once Human fans out there. If you want to support us, head to OnceHumanOfficial.com to check out our merch and tour updates. We’ll see you on the road soon.”
Logan Mader continues to embody the spirit of independent creativity, balancing life as a musician, producer, entrepreneur, and family man. His story is a reminder that whether you’re wielding a guitar or running a business, staying grounded in the moment is where the real power lies.
Stay heavy. Support the underground. Long live metal.
