On a recent episode, we had the chance to sit down with Tony Lepre, guitarist of Attack of the Rising, to talk about the band’s new album, the realities of being a live act, and what it’s like working with legendary producer Bill Metoyer. The conversation touched on everything from childhood influences to gear setups and what it really takes to keep a band alive in today’s music world.
Getting It Together — Or Blowing It
Early in the conversation, Tony hit on a truth every serious band knows:
“You’re exposing yourself to people. And if you’ve got your act together, it works out. But we’ve all seen bands blow a huge opportunity. It happens.”
Staying grounded and professional, especially when stepping into bigger scenes or opportunities, is essential. Not every band can handle it. But for Attack of the Rising, being prepared has paid off.
Different Scenes, Same Hustle
Tony and our host talked about the different music scenes—punk, metal, and everything in between. While some musicians are content staying in their niche, Tony acknowledged the business side of music:
“At the end of the day, it’s people walking through the door and handing over their dollars. That’s what keeps it all rolling.”
Music is art, yes—but it’s also a business. That’s something Attack of the Rising takes seriously.
The New Album: A Real First Release
The band's latest album, recorded with Bill Metoyer, represents a major leap forward. While they released an EP earlier, Tony sees this as their true debut:
“That EP was more like a live demo. This is a full production record. New lineup. New energy. Way beyond what we did before.”
There’s even a track on the album that’s been in the vault for nearly a decade. But with the new crew and Metoyer’s production, it finally found its place.
Bill Metoyer: Zen in the Studio
Working with legendary producer Bill Metoyer (Slayer, Armored Saint, Fates Warning) could be intimidating—but not for Attack of the Rising. Tony described Bill as:
“Zen. Not a taskmaster, but someone who knows how to get the best out of you.”
In fact, one of Tony’s guitar solos came together after Metoyer told him to stop overthinking and just play. That moment of raw energy made the final cut.
From Local Stages to Nationwide Reach
The band recently threw their album release party at the iconic Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood. The show was full of energy, merch giveaways, and a live performance of 8 out of the 10 album tracks. The feedback from fans across the country has been overwhelmingly positive.
“We’ve heard from people on the East Coast, the West Coast—even the Midwest. It’s really cool to see it spreading.”
The Gear Behind the Sound
For the gearheads out there, here’s what powers Attack of the Rising:
-
Tony: EVH 5150 amp with a Crunch cabinet
-
Billy: Engl amp rig
-
Mike (bass): A rotating setup that includes a SansAmp and multiple heads depending on the show
And of course, Tony credits much of their sonic power to their vocalist, saying simply:
“His voice is the sound.”
NAMM, Endorsements & What’s Next
The band was last seen at the Heavy Metal Hall of Fame in 2020, just before the pandemic hit. While the future of events like NAMM remains uncertain, Tony says they’re always ready to show up if it makes sense:
“We’re both ESP artists. If the booths are open and the people we work with are there, we’ll be there too.”
They’re also developing relationships with other gear brands and recently did a recording session with Rob Hill, another producer whose résumé is packed with classics.
Musical Roots: Jazz, Rock & Metal
Tony’s musical journey started early—thanks to his family.
“Our parents were music people. My dad was into rock, my mom was a total jazz head. So we grew up with Miles Davis, Brubeck, and Bob Seger all in the same mix.”
He cites early exposure to The Monkees, Beatles, and Stones as his gateway into music, which eventually evolved into a love for Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, and the thrash metal scene.
Writing as a Team — With No Limits
The band’s creative process is a collaborative one. Tony writes with his brother, the drummer, and tailors his riffs to the strengths of their vocalist and lineup.
“With this lineup, there are no limitations. We can go full-on prog metal freak show or heavy thrash in your face. Whatever the song calls for.”
Their underlying message? Hope and unity. One tribe, one human race.
Final Thoughts from Tony
“Metal God’s Radio kicks ass. I hope people dig the music.”
Attack of the Rising is a band that blends old-school discipline with fresh energy and a strong sense of purpose. With their latest release, they’re proving that experience, passion, and the right team can make a lasting impact—onstage and in the studio.
Stay heavy. Support the underground. Long live metal.
